The cliffs east of Nerja were shaped by freshwater long before they drew paddlers. Cascada de Maro, the waterfall that tumbles straight into the Mediterranean, is fed by springs that once turned the wheels of a sugar economy.
Sugar cane arrived on this coast with Arab cultivation and lingered for centuries; by the nineteenth century the San Joaquín mill at Maro depended on the same watercourses that now feed the sea.
